Social Service Week 2022
On the week of May 30th, our school community celebrated Social Service Week, a week dedicated to learning about, raising awareness for and celebrating the importance of Social Service! Each day’s events were curated to bring light to significant issues, all the while, linking to Social Service’s 2022 vision of CHIPS (Connection, Home, Initiative, Participation and Sustainability).
The week started off with a Social Service Whole School Assembly on Monday, featuring a guest speaker panel of Mac.Rob alumni, inspiring the school community to contribute to society, both in and after their high school journey! Then at lunchtime, both students and teachers gathered into the hall to view and perform slam poetry about a social justice issue of their choosing. On Tuesday, we held an intersectional feminism carnival, with both activites and a guest speaker in the hall. Dr. Kaye Quek, a senior lecturer in International Relations at RMIT delivered an inspiring and insightful seminar on feminism.
Wednesday’s LGBTQIA+ pride walk and hand printing aptly kicked off Pride Month, with students wearing rainbow accessories or clothing to show their support for the LGBTQIA+ community. Afterwards, on Thursday, Social Service and Enviro held a joint temporary thrift store in the BBQ area at lunchtime, encouraging us all to limit our use of fast fashion. Friday ended the week with a Student vs. Teacher Spelling Bee and scavenger hunt, both of which roused a spirit of friendly competition with Mac.Robbians, all the while raising awareness around various diseases!
Proceeds from Tuesday through to Friday were donated to White Ribbon Australia, Minus 18, the Australian Red Cross, and Fight MND, respectively. Overall, Social Service Week raised over $500, which we attribute to our wonderful and generous Mac.Rob community. The week was a great success and Social Service cannot wait for our next initiative!
Ultimately, Social Service would like to thank everybody involved in the week, from the Social Service Portfolio to our guest speakers as well as students and teachers that got involved.
